Just a brace days ago I left the Pa-Auk Forest Monastery (Pa-Auk Tawya) in central Burma, having spent there 3 months studying samadhi bhavana (concentration meditation). This struggle was quite different from what I had been expecting, and so I believe some people might find a thorough review helpful. Especially that the number of lay students seems to be rising and several of them grow absolutely frustrated by the end of their retreats. However, if you consider staying in the monastery, you should definitely consult the semi-official website. sorry ladies, this post will be of little pinch to you. I am a rationalist and don’t identify myself as a Buddhist. My formal training is limited to a few Goenka’s 10-day retreats. What do you imagine when you hear the phrase “Burmese forest priory”. I was expecting to be put in a shack that might fall apart at any moment, having to share it with countless representatives of the forest fauna and walking deep into the jungle at every scenery’s call. What I found, instead, was a standard that many budget guesthouses should aspire to. Virtually all the foreign lay students are put in the Sangha Office building upon arrival. The toilets (for the most corner, western-style) are on the same floor, and so are the showers, including one with warm water. Each room accommodates two people. There is only one drawback: The walls are incredibly thin and are no block to any sound at all. You might expect to hear conversations and bodily noises most of the time, even late at night since some people skip the morning meditation and saw wood in. If your roommate or neighbour is a snorer, you are out of luck. The motivation behind that is probably preventing bed bugs invasion, rather than compliance with the “no luxurious beds” bar. Anyway, if you think you need something softer, you might want to bring your own sleeping pad. If you are not sure whether you need it, you probably don’t. As to other facilities, the monastery hosts a truly well-stocked library. mostly Buddhist literature, but there are also shelves with New Agey self-help books, some novels, western philosophy (Bertrand Russell – how I infatuation that guy. There is also a clinic that theoretically is only available to the monks and novices, but I know of at least one lay student who also got help there. Most of the time, tough, only traditional “doctor” is turn. the work in the monastery. Not only that, sometimes my offer to help was turned down. For example, one time I saw a group of monks about to carry heavy boxes filled with books up the 200 steps to the meditation amphitheatre. when I offered my help, one monk got surprised, pointed at his elderly, frail friends and said: I mentioned above that a convenient accommodation is readily on tap to foreigners. At the same time, however, many Burmese monks sleep in groups in storage rooms, office spaces, meditation and dining halls. Likewise, foreigners are encouraged to get their nourishment first (foreign monks before local monks, and then lay foreigners before lay Burmese). The process to obtain 3-month meditation visa could hardly be any simpler. All you need to do is issue, fill and e-mail the Letter of Agreement to the monastery and the next day or so you will receive a Sponsorship Letter. This you bring to the Myanmar embassy to get your visa within 1-3 business days. Since you most probable need to pass one of those cities on your way to Burma, there is no point arranging your visa elsewhere and having to wait a couple months. The e-mail address of the abbey can be googled. If you cannot find it, feel free to ask me. For obvious reasons, the monks don’t want their main address circulating in the open. Having a local SIM be forthright for mobile data is discouraged but, of course, possible. The ooredoo carrier seems to provide a decent reception in the monastery. You can buy a SIM card at the stores 2-3km from the Tibetan Buddhism lamasery. The card itself will set you back $1. 5. Data package is $4 for 500MB/month (as of Feb 2015). People at the carrier’s call-centre speak good English and can proclaim you how to activate it. If you are thinking about staying longer than 3 months, you... The monks and lay stewards will guide you through the process and arrange it so that you don’t need to ever go. Source: Wojciech Baranowski's Blog
