The 2014 US Open tennis tournament is the 134th edition of the US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year will take place at the USTA Billie.
It's back to school for everyone except us:) We did not enroll Luke in preschool this year as I've come to the realization that this is the last year for the rest of my life that I'm going to have my two little cuties as home with me. I really... Not to mention that Luke really doesn't need preschool. When I told a lady in our neighborhood that Luke wasn't going back to Appleseed Academy this year her response was, "Oh (with a little disdain in her voice), so you're going to homeschool him. " To which I said, no, it's preschool and assured her that I was more than qualified to teach simple ABCs, colors and numbers. That's just something that bugs me. since when did Moms not become qualified to teach ABCs. I do have some sort of a plan to expose and educate my children instead of just sitting, eating bon-bons and letting their little brains rot while they watch TV and play video games. We wrapped up summer with a trip to the local pool (only because I had a Groupon. ) Luke loved the big slide and even jumped off the diving board all by himself for the first time. I had a lifeguard jump in and grab Olivia as she thought she was floundering and unable to stand up in 1. 5 feet of water. I had my eyes on her the whole time and was within 10 feet and know that this is how she "swims". She can be pretty scary but she has become quite the little fish over the summer. By the time the pool closed, she could jump in from the side all by herself, kick and swim her little self back to the steps. Luke is now able to do the front stroke and the backstroke very well and has had more skill that any kid we've had over to the pool all summer, regardless of their age. Olivia is at such a fun age and says the cutest things. When she goes potty she says, "You're so proud of me" and when she spills her milk she says, "You're not so proud of me". She'll tell me, "You're so cute Mom, I like you PJs" or "You're so nice Mom, I like your brown eyes". She can recite about a dozen nursery rhymes such as Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty, There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, Goosey Goosey Gander, Wee Willie Winkle, Diddle Diddle Dumpling my Son John, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Rock-A-Bye... Her imaginative play is really taking off as she can pretend and tell and re-tell stories. She is also starting to build representational objects out of bristle blocks, magnet blocks and drawings that actually look like things. She can point out the letter "O" and says "O for Olivia" anywhere she sees it. She continues to be potty trained 99% of the time. I warned her that if she pooper her pants again, she would be the one washing them out. Well, she pooped her pants. Of course Daddy was home and didn't do a double check and ended up dumping poop on the carpet, poop down her leg, poop all over the diaper changer and yelled for help like she was dying. you can imagine how well this was going. I then made Olivia clean her underwear out as this technique proved effective with Luke as he had to clean his pants one time, screaming and crying the whole time because it was gross but he never pooped in them again. Of course, as Olivia is cleaning her underwear out in the toilet, she smiles, looks up at me and says "See, I'm doing it", not phasing her in the least. She hasn't pooped in them since but I'm just not sure it had quite the same effect. Her other latest is peanut butter, peanut butter, peanut butter. Peanut butter toast, peanut butter on her pancakes, peanut butter roll up. Some days it's all she'll eat. She'll tell me that she is my little peanut butter baby. Luke is my little social butterfly. All he wants to do is play with his friends. One day, I sucked it up and I took him and two of his little friends on their bikes down to the park. They both live nearby so we walked to one house to get one kid and then to another enroute to the park. We pass by the local LDS Ward when Luke announced that it was Ethan's church. Both kids said, "That's my church, I go there too" and said the wished that Luke went to their church. Luke told them, " I go to a different church and my friends' names there are Seth, Bryson and Killian. " The subject matter ended with that but I have a feeling it is only the beginning of church talks and cultural issues we are going to face. Luke has made a new little friend named Remington, yes as in the firearm. Source: Manning Family Happenings

Historians have dubbed the period from the Civil War to World War I "the age of the university," suggesting that colleges, in contrast to universities, were static institutions out of touch with American society. Bruce Leslie challenges this view by offering compelling evidence for the continued vitality of colleges, using case studies of four representative colleges from the Middle Atlantic region Bucknell, Franklin and Marshall, Princeton, and Swarthmore. A new introduction to this classic reflects on his work in light of recent scholarship, especially that on southern universities, the American college in the international context, the experience of women, and liberal Protestantism's impact on the research university. According to Leslie, nineteenth-century colleges were designed by...
